Valerie Amos and Laurent Vieira de Mello : World Humanitarian Day 2012

"Valerie Amos is the UN Under Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator. Laurent Vieira de Mello is the son of Sergio Vieira de Mello, the Secretary General's Special Representative in Iraq who was killed in the bomb attack of August 19th 2003. Laurent is the chairman of the Sergio Vieira de Mello Foundation, a group dedicated to promoting dialogue for peaceful conflict resolution and advocating for the security and independence of humanitarian actors around the world".

Wife of the late Sergio Vieira de Mello, Annie Vieira de Mello, said today that World Humanitarian Day is now important for all people working in very difficult places. "(...) They're just being remembered. They're being part of the family and I think that's the day for solidarity." .World Humanitarian Day is observed on the anniversary of the bombing of UN Headquarters in Baghdad in 2003 which killed UN Special Representative Sergio Vieira de Mello and 21 colleagues.

19 August is World Humanitarian Day. The day is dedicated to humanitarian workers. They are the ones at the forefront of crises, often working in the world's most dangerous places and difficult conditions, risking their lives to save lives. There are more than half a million aid workers in the world today.
The
European Union is the leading donor of humanitarian aid in the world. In 2010 the European Commission alone dedicated €1.115 billion for assistance in humanitarian crises.
The European Commission's Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection department (ECHO) has more than 400 staff deployed in its 47 offices around the world. They are our eyes and ears on the ground. They assess the needs in emergencies and crises and monitor the deployment of EU humanitarian aid. These are their testimonies. (...).
